Why overrides are the ground truth of AI trust

Every AI system in production is overridden by humans.

This is not a failure. It is reality.

The failure is pretending otherwise.

Behavior reveals trust

Trust is not what people say.

Trust is what people do when consequences are real.

Surveys about AI trust are meaningless.

Policy statements about human-in-the-loop are aspirational.

Overrides are behavioral evidence.

Where people override AI, they do not trust it enough to let it decide.

The four types of overrides

Overrides are not all the same. Most organizations experience four types:

  1. Formal overrides
    Explicit exceptions logged and approved.
  2. Informal overrides
    Quiet workarounds outside official processes.
  3. Silent overrides
    Recommendations ignored without acknowledgement.
  4. Social overrides
    Decisions changed through conversation rather than systems.

Only the first type is visible.

Why unexamined overrides are dangerous

They are signals, not exceptions.

Do we know where AI is binding versus advisory in practice, not on paper?

If not, governance is theoretical.
